Kauri Cliffs was built in the late 1990s on an idyllic clifftop site on the very north of New Zealand’s (Aotearoa’s) North Island. It was the vision of an American developer, Julian Robertson, who hired architect David Harman to turn this sheep-grazing land into a world class course.
The setting overlooking the Cavalli Islands in the Bay of Plenty is simply magnificent. The land itself tilts towards the sea which means you get good views over the water all the way round the course.
While this is a resort course, don’t imagine it’s one of those flattering places where you will make a good score regardless of how you’re playing. You will really need to be on your game with the driver or the thick rough will be waiting to take your ball.
A round at Kauri Cliffs builds as it goes on. You get the views from the off, but the first holes are over undulating terrain where the biggest tests are keeping out of the rough and then making sure you have enough club to get to the sweeping and swooping greens.
The greens were slick when we played so you will really need precision in approaches.

Want to arrive by to Rosewood Kauri Cliffs by helicopter?
A private helicopter transfer directly to Rosewood Kauri Cliffs can be arranged, offering a scenic journey from Auckland. The journey typically takes about 60 minutes and provides stunning views of the Bay of Islands. An additional transfer would be required from Auckland International terminal to the airport’s Helipad (POA).

Airbus H130 (seats 5/6) – AUD$10,350 one way charter
TWIN BELL 429 (seats 7) – AUD$12,775 one way charter
Soft bags are preferred as very large hard suitcases may not fit. Below is a guideline only as luggage capacity will be confirmed once passenger weight is established. The H130 has three medium sized luggage compartments with capacity for roughly six medium soft suitcases and hand luggage. When the helicopter is carrying less than six passengers some large bags can be secured on spare seats within the cockpit. The Bell429 has one large luggage compartment (2.1m3). This allows for greater flexibility for large suitcases and golf clubs. Depending on the number of passengers the road transfer for additional luggage would also be POA.
